AMERICAN IDOL – A TALENT SHOW OR A POPULARITY CONTEST?
I do not watch it much, though my wife is a bit of a fan. However, what kind of talent show is a show where the best are booted off and the less-than-the-best are glorified?
American idol, just like X Factor, is a show whose results are determined by the public. It is reasonable to believe that millions of people cannot be wrong. However, democracy, by experience, has taught us that you can convince the majority you are the best even if your best fitted name is ‘moron’.
On this particular talent show, I have seen contestants voted for their good looks while they roar like Tyrannus Rex, and the genuinely talented one couldn’t scrape enough votes to buy peanuts. It is not surprising to discover that people do not know what is good music anymore (just watch MTV).
I do not think American Idol producers were wrong by throwing votes open to the public. However, I do think the ‘public’ could do with a bit of enlightenment on how to vote and what to vote for as well. Good luck to American Idol.
